Growth of Organic Foods
Organic foods are foods grown and made with very limited or no synthetic materials. For most of human history the vast majority of vegetables, meats, and fruits and produce is considered organic foods. Since the start of the 20th century a large amount of chemicals have been used to process foods, to perserve foods, and to spray as pesticides. Organic foods are heavily regulated in the United States, Europe, Canada and Japan. While organic farms have traditionally been small family runned businesses, the industry has grown significantly as more small farmers partake in the practice and large corporate farms have switched some production over. This has fueled a spectacular growth of over 20% a year for the past 20 years. So what drove this growth in organic foods? This is a classic case of demand side push as many Americans have become more health conscience with many marked campaigns to achieve it. However, organic food sales only represent 1% of food sales in the United States. Plus many supermarkets and grocery stores have limited to no selection of organics. That is why it is great to visit farmers markets such as the Redmond Farmers Markets to get the large selection of organic foods you and your family deserve.
